Needs Assessment
The mission of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) includes improving the care of patients with endocrine disorders through identification and promotion of best clinical practices, through promotion of clinical endocrine research, and through continuing medical education (CME). As part of the commitment of AACE to CME, AACE has established in conjunction with the American College of Endocrinology (ACE) a variety of educational instruments and programs for its membership including the journal, Endocrine Practice, and the ACE Self-Assessment Program (ASAP).
The ASAP was established in 2001 by identification of the 10 areas relative to clinical endocrinology and by identification of panel of experts in theses areas: Disorders of the Adrenal Gland; Diabetes Mellitus; Hypertension; Hypoglycemic Disorders; Serum Lipid Disorders; Nutrition Disorders and Management; Parathyroid and Bone Mineral Disorders; Disorders of the Pituitary Gland; Reproductive Endocrinology Disorders; and Disorders of the Thyroid Gland. The panel of experts identified the cognitive knowledge base and associated clinical skills for theses areas needed by endocrinologists to provide competent and optimal care for patients with endocrine disorders. The areas were expanded to include an 11th section on Pediatric Endocrinology in 2008.
The ASAP provides a core curriculum with updated information on the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and management of endocrine disease. This curriculum has been updated every two years to keep endocrinologists at the cutting edge of the subspecialty. The ASAP fulfills the cognitive needs of the endocrinologist to be effective and competent in delivering optimal endocrine care. ASAP also provides an opportunity for endocrinologists to meet in part, state licensure requirements for CME. Moreover, the program assists endocrinologists in preparation and maintenance of their subspecialty certification.

It is the policy of AACE to ensure balance, independence, objectivity and scientific rigor in all of its CME activities. Presentation content may include discussion of an unlabeled use of a commercial product or an investigational use of a product not yet approved for any purpose. AACE requires that participating faculty disclose to the audience any product(s) and its use(s) discussed in the educational activity that are unapproved/unlabeled for the use by the FDA or still considered investigational in nature.
Everyone who is in a position to control the content of an educational activity must disclose all relevant financial relationships.
